A future-ready campus with improved efficiency, better user experience, and data-driven strategy.
Major steps in innovation
In a long-term partnership with Officebooking, NHL Stenden has taken major steps toward building management innovation and digital campus services. This involves monitoring space usage, controlling HVAC, digital wayfinding and more.
Real-time data
At NHL Stenden, a combination of sensor data, Wi-Fi analytics, and integration with systems tools like Outlook and Topdesk provided accurate, real-time occupancy information. Based on these analytics, informed decisions could be made about which areas to keep open, adjust access to, or optimize for different times of the day.
Controlling HVAC with booking data
As part of its smart campus strategy, NHL Stenden integrates room bookings via Officebooking with HVAC control. When for example a lecture hall is reserved, the heating or cooling system is automatically activated in advance to ensure a comfortable temperature at the start of use. If no booking is made, the system remains off, reducing unnecessary energy consumption
I’m pleased that this innovative technology enables us to manage campus occupancy in a smart and sustainable way, supporting both user comfort and responsible facility use.
Wayfinding
Building on this, the 2024 wayfinding pilot addressed a growing user need for better navigation. Co-creation sessions and user research showed strong demand for digital tools to locate rooms and points of interest. Interactive kiosks and mobile-friendly maps were introduced, with positive feedback from users. Reception staff and students especially appreciated the added support for first-time visitors and larger, unfamiliar buildings. Read more on our wayfinding solutions.
